This weekend I was experimenting with the Windows Server 2016 Technical Preview 2 and this is what I found on the disk size of the operating system installation.
Firstly, the Windows Server 2016 Technical Preview 2 installation came with 2 options;
– Server Core Edition
– With Server Admin Tools (Assuming this will be Standard Edition)
Everyone should be familiar with the Server Core Edition and this edition is no different. But what is the disk size? An amazing ~6.65GB in size. I’m impressed with Microsoft throwing away some bloat ware.
Let’s try the second installation option. Assuming this may be the Standard Edition installation which my trusted desktop graphical interface.
What? This option will only launch a Command Prompt and Server Manager. Is Windows going to become Linux soon? Haha… To my surprise the second installation option with Server Admin Tools does not mean that you will actually get the familiar desktop. And the disk size is about ~8.25GB used for this installation option. Not too bad.
I’m still interested to view the new desktop graphical user interface. Let’s perform an installation using Powershell command below;
Install-WindowsFeature Server-Gui-Shell -Restart
Guess what? The disk space has used just ~8.6GB in size after having the desktop graphical user interface and it is just an additional of ~0.3GB more. Amazing…
